Hostile Waters by Peter Huchthausen, Igor Kurdin and R. Alan White tells the true story of the Soviet nuclear submarine K-219, which suffered a catastrophic accident while on patrol off the coast of the United States in 1986. With the submarine badly damaged and at risk of a nuclear explosion, Captain Igor Britanov and his crew fought to contain the disaster while dealing with fire, toxic fumes, flooding and the threat of radioactive contamination. Drawing on the experiences of survivors, the book recounts the desperate efforts to save the submarine and its crew against the backdrop of the Cold War.
