During an autumn storm, two women find themselves in danger in the mountains of Jämtland, near a raging river. They manage to save themselves, but make a macabre discovery. Near the riverbank, a hand is sticking out of the sand.
The police quickly arrive at the scene and discover six bodies, two of them children. The National Criminal Investigation Department takes over the case and identifies two of the bodies as a Dutch couple who disappeared in 2002. The other four may belong to a family from Stockholm, but they were not reported missing until January 2003, several months after their bodies had already been buried.
Sebastian Bergman’s curiosity is aroused when the case is suddenly taken over by the security service. Along with his team, he continues investigating to uncover the truth behind the mysterious deaths.
