Watch Your Mouth by Daniel Handler follows Joseph, a college student who spends the summer with his girlfriend Cynthia and her bizarre family in Pittsburgh. As he becomes increasingly suspicious of the family’s strange behaviour, including Cynthia’s mother secretly building a golem in the basement, Joseph finds himself caught up in a bizarre mix of lust, family secrets, Jewish folklore and increasingly disturbing events. Told partly as an opera and partly as a twelve-step recovery programme, it is a darkly comic, surreal and unconventional story about obsession, desire and a very dysfunctional family.
